LG Beefs Up Minibeam Series Projectors Ahead Of CES 2016

LG just announced plans to expand its Minibeam series of projectors at CES 2016. These projectors will debut next month at the Consumer Electronics Show and are a series of three new projectors in the Minibeam series. The models, which are the PH550, PW1000, and PW1500, feature Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity and improve on the one-hand grip design of the older Minibeam projectors while also featuring a slimmer profile for increased portability.

According to Brian Kwon, President and CEO of LG's Home Entertainment Company, "With more variety than ever before, LG Minibeam projectors offer enhanced portability with wireless connectivity for an enjoyable viewing experience anytime, anywhere. We look forward to officially unveiling the newest LG Minibeam series at CES 2016."

The compact PH550 eliminates the need for any and all wires thanks to its triple wire-free connectivity. This feature gives you the ability to send content from their smartphone or tablet to the projector via WiFi mirroring-enabled Screen Share. In addition to that, you can also connect speakers wirelessly through Bluetooth and even unplug from the wall for 2.5 hours of viewing using the rechargeable internal battery. All of these features give you a new level of connectivity and freedom and, despite the small size of the PH550, this projector is the brightest among LG's battery-powered projectors at 550 lumens.

If you are looking to get the best picture quality, then the PW1500 is your projector. It has the ability to render images at 1,500 lumens, which makes it the brightest projector in the entire LG Minibeam series. This projector is perfect for things like slide show presentations to theater-quality movies and is ideal for anyone who consumes a plethora of content. The PW1000 offers all the features of the PW1500 though at a lower lumen output and at a more competitive price.

These aren't the only things that LG has up its sleeve. Another key projector is the company's Ultra Short Throw LED Home Theater Projector, the PF1000U. This projector was honored with a CES 2016 Innovation Award and is a versatile HD projector with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and 1,000-lumen brightness that affords you clear visibility, sharp contrast, and rich blacks even in environments with lots of ambient light.

The PF1000U features Ultra Short Throw Technology (UST) and is able to project a 100" picture from only 15" away from the wall or screen. Sony Reveals Stunning 4K Short-Throw Projector

How much is too much? When will we, as consumers, be satisfied with what we have? The short answer probably never. In the ever growing field of visual technology, developers are hard at work making video devices that have pictures that are so crisp, so clear and so realistic that we will eventually think we are physically in the entertainment we are watching. The latest stab at this venture is 4K technology. 4K is the successor to what most of us have grown accustomed to, 1080p HD, and bills itself as UHD, or Ultra High-Definition. The technology has just recently started to creep into televisions and computer monitors but now even projector companies are getting in on the fun.

Back at CES 2014 consumers were given a taste of Sony's first attempt at a short-throw 4K projector that works as perfectly on walls as it does on projector screens. Well it didn't take Sony long to announce that not only is the projector going to be consumer ready this year but also that the US is getting THIS MONTH! In case you are unfamiliar with the technology, short-throw projectors allow you to have very large pictures without having to project the image from across the room. Basically you can set the projector right in front of the wall or screen you want to project on and the picture is big and beautiful.

The projector itself, known as the Sony Life Space UX, is a short-throw 4K projector that is housed in a sleek rectangle that looks a lot like a nice credenza, which makes it perfect for living rooms and entertainment centers as it pretty much blends in with the rest of the furniture. There are four different components that comprise the Life Space UX. Sony's demonstration of the technology suggest that you pair two projectors for optimal effect, though I can't imagine a lot of people would have a use for all these different projections all over your room. Regardless, a single short-throw 4K projector looks to be a nice option if you are looking for a truly high-end home entertainment setup.

In addition to the Life Space UX, Sony also announced that it will be making a portable version of the projector. This one is said to be easily packed up and taken with you wherever you go and is capable of projecting a 27" picture. However, I'm not entirely sure that there's even a market for projectors that small with that crisp of a picture quality but I digress. BenQ Unveils Two New Laser Projectors

BenQ America, one of the most popular projector manufacturers in the country, has just unveiled an all new pair of short-throw video projectors specifically designed for use in the education industry. In addition to that, both of the new projectors use mercury-free blue core light engines for increased safety and environmental friendliness.

The new projectors have been labeled the LX60ST and the LW61ST. Both projectors were designed for a low total cost of ownership by using the blue core lighting engine, which uses a laser light source as opposed to the traditional mercury lamp. This allows both devices to achieve as much as 90% less light source power consumption, according to BenQ.

The technology also optimizes the units' brightness while offering a longer life span, according to the company. BenQ also announced that both the LX60ST and LW61ST offer an average 20,000 hours of brightness and produce an ultra-high 80,000:1 contrast ratio. An instant on/off feature also saves you a lot of time on start up and powering down while a manual brightness-level adjustment accommodates different classroom environments.

The SmartEco Advanced mode, found in both projectors, automatically determines the optimal brightness level based on your input source. At the same time, a No Source Detected mode automatically lowers brightness to 10% when no display has been detected for more than three minutes. Also, an Eco Blank mode enables blanking out the screens for both projectors when not in use to redirect students' focus, while also lowering light source power consumption to only 10%.

Finally, the BenQ blue core light engine classroom projectors offer 2,000 ANSI lumens brightness, XGA / WXGA resolution and 0.6 / 0.49 short-throw projection. Mitsubishi Releases Two New Short-Throw Projectors

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America introduced a new extreme short-throw line of DLP-based front projectors earlier this week. Mitsubishi's WD380U-EST and XD380U-EST projectors are both said to use high-quality, extreme short-throw lenses as opposed to mirrors in order to cast large images from short distances.

Mitsubishi gave these projectors a sleek design which is said to make installation more flexible, operation cleaner and provide less image degradation as well as less general wear and tear as a result.

The first two projectors in this new line incorporate a lot of things like USBA + B inputs, support for computer-free presentations, LAN display, a built-in 10-watt speaker, audio standby, closed captioning and 3D-ready capabilities. The high-brightness models shell out 2,800 and 2,500 lumens of brightness and also incorporate a filter-free design for a low cost of ownership according to Mitsubishi.

Both the wide format WD380U-EST and the XGA resolution XD380U-EST operate very quietly producing only 28 dB of sound and even offer up to 6,000 hour lamp life when it is run in low mode. Both of these models also include a 3,000:1 contrast ratio.

According to Presentation Products Division Product Manager for Mitsubishi Wayne Kozuki, "It's technological prowess that we use to create imaging wonder, not smoke and mirrors. We're one of the first brands to offer such a revolutionary lens-based design in our ultra-short-throw projectors, and with Mitsubishi's quality, you can rely on our product performance. They are truly state-of-the-art."

New lenses enable these projectors to have that kind of short-throw focus performance and also allow them to project up to a 70-inch WXGA image from less than 23-inches away. The new models also create a great image and help prevent shadows on the screen or projector surface that may be distracting.

Both projectors weigh about nine pounds which allows them to be easily transported and easily maintained. Teachers can convert their class presentations into .PTG files or .JPEG images and then save them on a USB flash drive. They can then plug the drive directly into the projector and start teaching, no computers involved.

These devices also support WiFi connectivity if you still want to use a PC or laptop but you don't want to mess with all those cables. These two projectors also have an internal 10-watt speaker and include HDMI inputs as well as an RS232 connector and RJ45 input for third-party remote management products.

Both come with a three-year limited warranty on parts and labor as well as a one-year limited warranty on the lamp. Mitsubishi also offers an Express Replacement Assistance (ERA) Program that has next business-day replacement for down units that are under warranty. The WD380U-EST is expected to have a retail price of $1,699 and the XD380U-EST is expected to have a $1,499 retail price.

Dell's S300WI Interactive Projector

The new S300WI projector from Dell is an ultra-portable, short-throw DLP wireless projector that comes equipped with an interactive pen and 3D capabilities. Aside from the interactive pen and the 3D capabilities, the S300WI is virtually identical to the existing S300W model.

The projector is powered by the S450 DarkChip3 DLP chip from Texas Instruments and is promoted as an alternative to a fixed whiteboard. With the S300WI, any surface can potentially be turned into an interactive surface for classroom projects, demonstrations or business meetings.

The S300WI weighs slightly more than 3kg and measures 30.6cm wide by 9.9cm tall and 24.6cm deep making it very portable. It comes with a remote control with integrated laser pointer, VGA and USB video cables and a 6m-long mini-USB cable to be used with the interactive pen.

You can mount the projector on either a ceiling or a wall or you can just set it on a solid surface. It can run as either front or rear projection and video input is via two VGA ports, HDMI, composite or S-Video connections. It can support up to 1080p HD with a native resolution of 1,280 by 800.

A USB display driver is stored in the projector which makes for a quick and easy connection using the supplied cable. An app for viewing JPEG photos on a USB memory stick is included along with a bundled converter which transforms PowerPoint files into a suitable format.

You can use a wireless or wired (802.11 b/g) network connection to connect as many as 30 PCs, each using a small app downloaded directly from the browser-based management interface. There is also support for four-way split-screen conference calls when using a network connection.

The 3D-Ready feature allows multiple users to watch projected 3D content provided they each have a suitable graphics card, 3D content and DLP Link active 3D glasses. The interactive pen is a bit large and requires two AA batteries boasting a 50 hour lifespan.

There are two mouse buttons on the top of the pen and a third button that can be assigned various functions. Some reviews have stated that the pen feels difficult to grip and use as the buttons are in awkward locations.

Once you get everything up and running it all seems to work quite well. The fan is quiet and the on-screen menus are logically arranged. The 0.52 throw ratio gives off a minimum focus distance of 0.5m which delivers an impressive 96cm by 60cm display which rapidly increases to a maximum of 633cm by 396cm at 3.3m. This makes the S300Wi perfect for use in classrooms, meeting rooms or any other confined space.
